« Entre le dernier roman de la terre (Trente arpents) et le premier roman urbain (Bonheur d’occasion), Le Survenant est la première œuvre de la modernité québécoise en ce qu’elle effectue la synthèse des valeurs nomades et sédentaires qui ont présidé à la naissance de la Nouvelle-France. À l’image du Chenal du Moine, petit village ancré au milieu du fleuve, parfait mélange d’eau et de terre, la figure christique du « Grand-dieu-des-routes » réussit ce passage de l’ancien au nouveau, qui n’abolit pas l’ancien mais l’accomplit, en n’obéissant plus qu’à la loi plus exigeante de l’amour. C’est ainsi que Germaine Guèvremont, mine de rien, dénoue le conflit entre Maria Chapdelaine et Le Refus Global qui continuera de nous épuiser aussi longtemps qu’on voudra guérir de ce « mal du pays », qui, selon Aquin, « est à la fois besoin et refus d’une culture-matrice ». Le Survenant, c’est l’avenir du Québec raconté par quelqu’un qui revient au pays après avoir parcouru le vaste monde : « Le ciel pompe l’eau de la mer et retourne le sel à la terre. On dirait que faut que tout recommence dans ce bas monde. » |

" Between the last novel of the earth (Trente arpents) and the first urban novel (Bonheur d'occasion), Le Survenant is the first work of Quebec modernity in that it synthesizes the nomadic and sedentary values that presided at the birth of Nouvelle-France. In the image of the Chenal du Moine, a small village anchored in the middle of the river, a perfect mixture of water and land, the Christian figure of the "Grand-dieu-des-routes" succeeds in this passage from the old to the new, which does not abolish the old but accomplishes it, by obeying only the more demanding law of love. This is how Germaine Guèvremont, casually, settles the conflict between Maria Chapdelaine and Le Refus Global that will continue to wear us down as long as we want to heal from this “homesickness”, which, according to Aquin, “is both a need and a refusal of a culture-matrix”. Le Survenant is the future of Quebec told by someone who returns to the country after having travelled the vast world: "The sky pumps the water from the sea and returns the salt to the earth. It looks like everything has to start over in this lowly world.” |
