Dépouillement complet :
"Avenues 3: English Skills is the third of a three-level series. Designed for high-intermediate and advanced students of English as a Second Language, Avenues 3 is a comprehensive integrated skills book. This series is the culmination of my writing career.
In the 1990s, I looked at existing textbooks with integrated grammar blurbs. As an anglophone who had moved to Québec, I was aware that a strong background in grammatical concepts helped me feel more secure as I learned French. Thus, when I wrote Brass Tacks, I separated the comprehensive grammar section from the skills. Over the years, while reworking that basic model, I have tried to make the grammar exercises more appealing. I have also honed my understanding of the types of errors students make, creating skills and grammar content that better matches their needs. Finally, with each new series and edition, I have relished the challenge of researching and finding interesting and relevant material for both students and teachers.
This second edition includes several exciting new features. Each chapter now begins with a Quick Chat activity. At the start of class, students can engage in non-stop talking or free-writing activities to warm up for the day's lessons. A new Words of Wisdom section contains short excerpts from philosophical texts, poems, and classical stories. Students can read the words of Rainer Maria Rilke, Rumi, Kahlil Gibran, Virginia Woolf, and others. Updated chapters deal with issues of trust and creativity. Additionally, every chapter now has two videos and half of the readings are new. [...]
Whereas in the previous edition, reading strategies were scattered throughout the book, in this edition they are consolidated in one section. The story analysis workshop - now called Literary Elements and Story Selections - has been enhanced with four new short stories. [...]
Avenues 3: English Skills, Second Edition contains more material than necessary for a forty-five-hour course, allowing you to choose from different chapters once you've exhausted certain topics. As well, chapters can be presented in whatever sequence you prefer. [...]" (Preface, p. III)
