Résumé : "Duncan Campbell Scott was born in Ottawa in 1862. Although he is perhaps better known as a poet, his many short stories are worthy of attention for their quiet power and enduring readability. This volume brings together a selection of stories that range across a diversity of settings: a typical village of nineteenth-century Quebec, a genteel household in Ottawa of the 1870s, the isolation of an Indian village on the north sore of Lake Superior. The cast of characters, too, is varied; we meet the conservative village, the aging Indian hero, lovers, children, animals. Within this variety, there are recurrent themes: the growth of self-knowledge, the effects of emotion and time, the devotion and the tension of family life, the commitment to one's fellows. This volume provides a representative selection of the short stories of an important figure in Canadian literary history." (Book Cover)
